My goal is for people to draw from within their strengths, abilities, skills, and knowledge that are not being utilized and when needed help them with new resources to resolve their dilemmas.
I have always enjoyed people and when young learned French and lived in France to become fluent and began learning about cultural differences. When I returned I was even more interested and learned Spanish finishing my studies at the Universidad de Mexico in 1969. In 1979 I began working as a counselor at a home for emotionally distressed youth. I loved helping people and decided I wanted to be a therapist. I moved to California to get my graduate degree in 1980.
I began working in hospitals and with hospice to help individuals and families cope with critical and chronic illness as well as the grief that comes along with them. During this time I received my masters in social work, followed in 1986 with my clinical license. As I already spoke Spanish I learned more about the spanish speaking culture in California and began my practice in both English and Spanish.
In 1985 I attended the Evolution of Psychotherapy conference in Phoenix. While I was thrilled to see and learn from the greats of the time, Beck, Satire, Minuchin, Ellis, Gouldings, etc., I was enthralled with the presentations of Jeff Zeig, Ernest Rossi, Steve Lankton, Michael Yapko, Steve Gilligan and others about Milton Erickson. Milton Erickson's understanding of how to help people change using the unconscious through stories, hypnosis, and other techniques seemed to make change happen quickly with long lasting results. I began my studies of his work and continue it to this day.
Seeing people become happier and healthier continues to bring me joy and fulfillment in my chosen career. I use brief therapy techniques, support and practical feedback to help clients address current life challenges and long-standing issues. When problems have not resolved I help people to look at what they might do differently that will improve the outcome. With compassion and understanding, I help individuals and couples find resolution to a wide range of personal concerns and psychological issues.
